Yale Alley Cats: A Night of Pop

In this event organized by BÜMK, Boğaziçi Univeristy guested world renowned Acapella group The Yale Alley Cats with the opening of Popapella, dear pop acapella group of our university. Popapella has performed various songs from the pop world. From Michael Jackson to Kenan Dogulu, from Lady Gaga to Selena Gomez. My personal favorite from Popapella was 'Slow Down' by Selena Gomez. That song, surely, has brought the evening to the climax. The arrangements of songs were made by either current choir members or former members, and hearing this for the first time made me respect the whole performance on a new level.

Needless to say, the audience was very excited to see our friends perform the songs that they'd worked so hard for. I am sure that when Esin Gürgür, the founder of the pop choir, listened to Popapella’s performance she was proud and grateful to everyone who had worked hard since the establishment of the pop choir.

We would like to give heartfelt thanks to BÜMK for hosting this great evening of music. It is a blessing to share my experiences.

The night's guests of honor, Yale University's acapella group the Alley Cats, performed a handful of masterpieces from local Yale anthems to Frank Sinatra. Even Walt Disney's Cat song! What a coincidence they have an unusual connection with cats I guess…

The Alley Cats were formed in 1943 as a jazz group, and through time it has found its sound in acapella. The members of Alley Cats were very witty, energetic, and entertaining to watch, to say the least. The stage presence shocked the audience. That experience was more than just listening to music. It contained well-performed bits and plays that complimented their silk-like voices. It was an interactive performance that got us snapping our hands and bopping our heads along to the rhythm. Not to forget, the epic harmonica was just like pickled ginger we eat along with sushi to refresh our taste buds, or should I say ears, and prepare for the next song!

When the night was coming to an end we were truly drunk on the voices of Popapella and Alley Cats. They blessed our hearts and chilled our minds with their incredible performances.

By the way, the Alley Cats are looking for a cat that suits every member. Perhaps if they had a campus like ours, they might have already found one!
